Buerkle's lead grows after absentee ballot count

Ann Marie Buerkle TMs lead over Congressman Dan Maffei in the race for the 25th Congressional District has grown slightly after some absentee ballots were counted this week.

The Cayuga County Board of Elections tells CNY Central that it has counted its absentee ballots. Anne Marie Buerkle received 59 votes, and Dan Maffei received 35 votes. 35 additional ballots were challenged and not counted toward either total. They will end up going before a judge in court to determine their validity.

Further west in Monroe County, the Board of Elections office says officials have finished with the affidavits, but the tallying of the absentee ballots only began at 9:00 Friday morning. That count is not yet complete.

After the Cayuga County absentee ballot counting was complete, Buerkle gained 24 votes. She now has a total lead over 711 votes over the incumbent Maffei, up from 687 votes before the count began.

Wayne County and Onondaga County will begin counting absentee ballots next week.
