Veteran receives huge surprise at Carolina Country Music Fest

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - A disabled veteran received an emotional, heartwarming surprise in the middle of Darius Rucker's performance at the Carolina Country Music Fest Friday night.

Jonathan Mayberry thought he was going to meet the country music superstar; instead, the wounded hero received the deed to a new home.

The program that awards the home is the Homes 4 Wounded Heroes program through The Military Warriors Support Foundation, along with Rucker, presented Mayberry the surprise in the middle of the Friday night headliner's performance.

Homes4WoundedHeroes awards 100-percent mortgage-free homes to combat wounded veterans and Gold Star spouses of heroes who have fallen in combat.

In addition to the home, each family receives three years of family and financial mentoring so that they may learn the skills necessary to become happy and successful homeowners.

The organization has awarded over 760 mortage-free home homes to wounded veterans, worth more than $80 million.
