72 arrested as part of "Operation Smackdown"

In total, 72 people were arrested in "Operation Smackdown".

SYRACUSE, N.Y. --- It's the latest push to get heroin off the streets of Central New York communities.

State Police Superintendent Joe D'Amico said "The individuals charged today had absolutely no regard for the damage or danger that they do to our community."

72 people have been arrested after State Police say they brought and sold heroin, cocaine and other pills up from the Bronx and into Central New York. The State Attorney Generals office says these arrests will send a ripple effect throughout the drug dealing community and will help fight back against illegal drugs.

"The people that are on these charts are not drug end users. Every single one of these people is alleged to be a drug dealer, a drug seller." said Deputy Attorney General Peri Kadanoff,

Narcotics sales impact the community beyond the risks related to taking drugs themselves. Firearms were recovered during the arrests.

One man, Keyshawn Smith, is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon "because when he found that rival drug dealers were getting too close to his turf he shot at them." said Kadanoff.

Police say the people arrested were dealing primarily on Syracuse's Southside. But there were also plans to sell these drugs into suburban communities in Onondaga and Oswego counties.

"Heroin's not just a city problem, it's a concern for every region in our state including suburban and rural areas. It's addiction known no boundaries." said D'Amico.

Police are still looking for more suspects, but are confident they'll be caught soon.

In the course of the nearly year-long investigation authorities seized:

- Over 10,000 bags of heroin

- 2 ounces of heroin that could have been packaged into 2,100 bags of heroin

- Over 1 pound of cocaine

- 65 oxycodone pills

- 21 Hydrocodone pills

- 2 hand guns

- A stun-gun Police say was disguised as a flashlight

- 9 rifles, one of which was an assault rifle

- 7 shotguns

- $40,000 cash

Police say 72 people were charged with 227 crimes.
