12-year-old boy dies of injuries suffered in Elmira fire

The father of a 12-year-old boy injured in a fire at an upstate New York home late last month says his son has died at a Rochester hospital.

Daniel Mattison Sr. tells the Star-Gazette of Elmira that his son, Daniel Mattison Jr., died last Saturday at Strong Memorial Hospital, where he had been taken after being burned in a fire July 31 at his home in Elmira.

The boy's mother, 44-year-old Lisa Brown, was also injured and remains in guarded condition at the same hospital.

The elder Mattison says his son had autism and was unable to speak or use sign language.

Elmira fire officials say the investigation into the blaze is continuing, but so far the cause appears to have been accidental.
