A 2nd grade student brought an unloaded handgun to McKinley-Brighton Elementary School Tuesday.
Syracuse Police say the 8-year-old boy and a friend were playing with the .22 caliber handgun in the lunchroom, when a staff member spotted the student with the weapon and immediately confiscated it.
According to a statement from the Syracuse City School District, the 2nd grader brought the gun from home.
The district's statement says no one was injured and the school was not in lock down. Dismissal Tuesday afternoon was delayed by about 10 minutes to make sure all parents received a letter from the school principal describing the incident.
The Syracuse City School District says the safety and security of its students and staff is critical, and it will continue to monitor and review safety protocols.
Syracuse Police are currently investigating.
