31 traffic tickets issued in two hours at busy Ithaca intersection

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 17:37:35 GMT — After receiving complaints about illegal left hand turns at a busy intersection in Ithaca during rush hour, police issued 31 tickets in two hours.Ithaca Police say they conducted heavy traffic enforcement Monday at the intersection of West Buffalo Street and North Fulton Street in response to complaints about drivers ignoring the "No Left Turn 3pm-6pm" sign.Police say they issued 31 tickets during the two hour detail.They issued 27 tickets for illegal left turns during the posted 3pm-6pm times. They also issued two aggravated unlicensed operation tickets, one unlicensed operation ticket, and operation of a motor vehicle while wearing headphones ticket.Officer Jamie Williamson told CNY Central's Jim Kenyon, "It's just a great job by the officers...absolutely amazing. It's a testament to how the officers work and how responsive this department is to complaints from citizens."Cynthia Yahn works in a building at the intersection and says accidents are so common, she and her co-workers no longer look out the window when they hear screeching tires and a crash. She says they simply call 9-1-1. "You can't cross the street without worrying for your life...we've seen five people hit, 2 bicyclists and 3 pedestrians. I've been hit." Yahn is not surprised that police would be able to issue 31 tickets in two hours. She says it's time for traffic engineers to take a hard look at the intersection in hopes of relieving the traffic congestion.
