Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire that claimed the life of a 4-year-old boy despite efforts by firefighters and others to rescue him from the burning home.
Fire officials tell the Press & Sun-Bulletin that the blaze was reported early Tuesday afternoon at the home of William and Leanna Hulse in the rural Tioga County town of Richford, about 20 miles northwest of Binghamton.
The parents were able to get their other two children, ages 2 and 6, out of the house safely, but the couple, neighbors and firefighters were unable to rescue 4-year-old Trent. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner's office.
The house was so heavily damaged that it was considered a total loss.
