2-year-old twins ejected from car during rollover crash on 481 in critical condition
NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. —
The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says six people were sent to the hospital after a rollover crash early Tuesday morning.
The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. on Interstate 481 in North Syracuse. Deputies say the driver, identified as a 19-year-old from North Syracuse, was driving north on 481 when he lost control, hit a guardrail and drove into the median. The car then flipped several times, ejecting 2-year-old twins in the process, before coming to rest near an overpass.
The Sheriff's Office helicopter, Air 1, was brought to the scene to provide light as deputies searched for the twins. Deputies say one was found nearly 20 feet below the overpass on South Bay Road, and the other was also found shortly after the search began. The twins are listed in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital.
The driver and three of his passengers - ages 15, 13 and 6 - suffered minor injuries and were also taken to Upstate Hospital.
Investigators say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but notes none of the children were in "age appropriate child restraint devices" at the time of the crash.
The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash.
