Authorities say they've found 19 of the two dozen puppies taken from a northern New York pet store and abandoned in the woods.
Police in Plattsburgh tell local media that five puppies remain missing as of Wednesday night. Officials say the husband of the owner of Northern Puppies has admitted to taking the puppies from his wife's store last weekend and leaving them in various places outside Plattsburgh.
Reports of people finding puppies in the woods began reaching police Saturday night. Thirteen were rescued by Monday night and six more have been found since Tuesday.
Police say 36-year-old Michael Staley told them he abandoned the dogs to avoid costly veterinarian bills. He's facing 24 counts of animal abandonment, a misdemeanor.
Last month, authorities closed his wife's pet store and charged her with animal cruelty after two kittens were found dead.
