5,000 crates of onions burn in spectacular Granby fire
5,000 crates of onions burned as a fire started in a barn at Sorbello & Son's Farm in Granby.
Oswego County Fire Coordinator John Forbes said the call first came in at 4:45 p.m. when witnesses saw flames and smoke coming from the area. 125 firefighters were on the scene from 35 different departments from Oswego, Onondaga, and Cayuga counties.
The fire was in a 10,000 square-foot pole barn containing 5,000 crates of onions stacked floor to ceiling. The barn was located on County Route 8 between Highway 176 and Russell Road.
No workers were there at the time and no fire crews were hurt fighting the blaze. The biggest issue was finding enough water to combat the flames.
"Hydrants were in the area," Forbes said. "But they could not supply the kind of water needed to fight this blaze."
Fire crews were still on the scene late Tuesday evening battling hot spots.
