55 colleges are facing Title IX sexual assault investigations, and four of them are in New York, according to the Education Department.
This, just two days after the White House task force promised government transparency on sexual assault in higher education.
Previously, the agency would confirm when investigations were going on, but the public was often unaware of them.
â??We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil rights,â?? Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon said. â??We hope this increased transparency will spur community dialogue about this important issue. I also want to make it clear that a college or universityâ??s appearance on this list and being the subject of a Title IX investigation in no way indicates at this stage that the college or university is violating or has violated the law.â??
The Title IX cases are opened because of sexual violence or harassment claims have been made.
These four New York schools are on the investigation list:
City University of New York Hunter College
Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Sarah Lawrence College
