8 people killed in Richland house fire

The home was quickly consumed by fire.

Eight people, including some children, are dead after a house fire in Richland Sunday morning. Fire crews were called to the home on County Route 48 just before 3 am. They found the house engulfed in flames, and could not get inside to battle the fire.

Authorities say one person was on the first floor of the two-story house when the fire broke out. That person tried to alert the other eight people, who were all upstairs. But only the person downstairs made it out safely.

The Oswego County Sheriff's Office says there were no working smoke detectors in the house. Fire investigators are not sure of the cause. But it does not appear to be suspicious.

The names and ages of the victims have not been released.
