Interstate 81 North is closed between the Preble and Homer exits because of an accident. We're told a tractor-trailer hit the bridge over Preble Road, according to Cortland County 911.
The stretch of 81 North will remain closed until State DOT officials can inspect the bridge to make sure it's safe.
Authorities say the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 between Binghamton and Syracuse remain closed after a piece of heavy equipment being towed on a truck hit a bridge over a local road.
Police say the equipment was being towed on a road in the Cortland County town of Preble around 5:40 p.m. Thursday when it hit an I-81 bridge about 20 miles south of Syracuse.
State Department of Transportation crews have closed the highway's two northbound lanes between exits 12 and 13 while they inspect the damage to the bridge.
State police say northbound traffic is being directed off the interstate at Exit 12 at Homer and directed to nearby Route 281. Motorists can re-enter the highway at Exit 13 in Preble.
No injuries were reported.
