A woman is dead, 2 kids hurt after tire from boat trailer hits vehicle

State Police on the scene of the crash on I-690.

A woman is dead after a freak accident on I-690 West Thursday afternoon in the Town of Van Buren.

State Police say Nevada J. West, 62, of Liverpool was driving a van towing a boat trailer on I-690 when a tire came off. Troopers say the tire crossed the median and hit the windshield/roof area of a car heading westbound driven by Jennifer L. Miles, 33, of Baldwinsville, killing her.

Troopers say there were two children in car seats in the backseat of Miles' car, a one-year-old and four-year-old. They were taken to Upstate Medical Center for treatment of minor abrasions, troopers say. Miles was babysitting the four-year-old, the one-year-old was her child.

Investigators say they will be "taking enforcement action" against the owner of the trailer. They say the trailer was unregistered.

Troopers spent several hours Thursday afternoon reconstructing the accident scene as part of the investigation.

I-690 westbound reopened to all traffic around 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
