Alleged Syracuse bank robber indicted

Timothy Okun

25-year-old Timothy Okun of Syracuse was indicted by an Onondaga County Grand Jury Wednesday for several charges in connection with a bank robbery last month.

Police say Okun robbed the Fulton Savings Bank on Bartel Road. Okun allegedly walked into the bank, displayed what appeared to be a handgun, and got away with cash.

After surveillance photos of the suspect were distributed to the local news, detectives say they received several anonymous tips regarding the identity of the suspect. Police say they located and arrested Okun in the parking lot of the Carousel Center mall without incident.

Okun was charged with second degree robbery, third degree grand larceny, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property, and first degree escape.

Police say he briefly escaped from custody as he was escorted to the Onondaga County Justice Center. He broke free from a detectiveâ??s hands as they assisted him out of their vehicle. He ran out of the vehicle and into the parking lot where he was taken into custody. Police say he was handcuffed at the time.
