An animal rights group wants to install 10-foot-tall tombstones for turkeys and cows at the sites of recent truck crashes in Iowa and upstate New York.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says on its website that it's seeking permission to erect the temporary highway markers in Sioux City and just outside Albany.
The group says more than 500 turkeys died when a livestock truck crashed in Sioux City on April 12. Three days later, 11 cows died when an 18-wheeler hauling 104 cattle to Kansas crashed in the Albany County town of Berne.
PETA says the markers would advocate vegetarian diets.
A local official tells the Albany Times Union that Albany County is unlikely to permit such a memorial on a public right-of-way.
