Area hospitals dangerously low on essential sterilization chemical

Syracuse-area hospitals extended their appreciation to Senator Chuck Schumer, as he continued his push to get an adequate supply of biologic test markers to hospitals, which are essential during the sterilization of surgical equipment.

A recent production disruption in the test markers prompted St. Josephâ??s Hospital to call Senator Schumerâ??s office, who wanted to open up lines of communication about the supply levels of the product for the protection of patients, hospitals and healthcare providers. The biologic supply is produced almost entirely by one company.

â??In early January, the company that provides our biologic test markers for the Sterrad sterilization process notified us of production issues and supply disruption,â?? said Kathryn Ruscitto, president and chief executive officer for St. Josephâ??s. â??Since then, we have not had any assurance of predictable supply, which has interfered with our ability to optimally use the Sterrad device without which we could not perform surgeries. We thank Senator Schumer for helping to elevate this issue at the Federal level and are hopeful the company will provide us some answers.â??
