Armed Cayuga County man attempts to escape police on a horse

A Cayuga County man tried to escape police by horse, and armed with a loaded rifle, when they responded to his home on State Route 34 in the Town of Ira on Thursday.

Police say they were responding to a report of an armed man who was threatening to harm himself.

When deputies arrived, they say 25-year-old Joshua D. Butler attempted to leave the area by horse with a loaded rifle and a large quantity of ammunition.

Deputies say Butler was saddling the horse, refused to cooperate with them and was taken into custody.

Butler was charged with menacing a police officer, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
