An assault rifle was found in a large pile of trash and debris on the west side of Syracuse Thursday evening, and now the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office is looking for the owner.
Deputies were on routine patrol when they found the big pile of trash, near the backyard of an abandoned house on Putnam Street.
It was in the middle of the pile, hidden under some roofing material, that deputies found the black Smith and Wesson .22 caliber M&P 15-22 assault rifle.
Right now, the rifle is being tested for latent print and ballistic -- cloues that investigators hope will lead them to the owner.
No one was around when the rifle was found.
The investigation continues.
