Auburn man accused of posing as SPCA worker to solicit donations

An Auburn man is accused of posing as an SPCA worker to solicit donations.

Police were called to Fitch Avenue near South Street around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday for a suspicious man who was going door to door soliciting donations for the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY. When the officer arrived, the man took off running. He was taken into custody on Chapman Avenue after a foot chase.

18-year-old Calvin Laning, of 33 N. Division St. Apt. #2, was charged with attempted petit larceny and obstructing governmental administration. He does not work for the Finger Lakes SPCA.

Laning was also charged in an unrelated robbery near Orchard and Jefferson Streets on February 4. In that incident, police say he forcibly stole money from a child. He was charged with robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.
