An Auburn man is accused of taking his own money and pretending someone was taking it from his ATM.

36-year-old Charles Updike, Jr., of Howard Street, is charged with falsely reporting an incident and making a punishment false written statement.

Auburn Police say he told them someone had stolen thousands of dollars from his Bank of America checking account in September and October. He told police the incidents were done via mobile banking and ATM transactions at various banks and ATM machines in Auburn.

Police obtained video footage of the person who was making the ATM withdrawals. They say the person in the footage was Updike, who was claiming to be a victim.

Police say the investigation took up about 15 hours of the officer and detective's time in paperwork, follow-up and arrest.

Updike did not tell police why he made it up.
