Benefit for family of two-year-old boy killed in Hastings car crash

Toys still cover the front lawn of this Hastings home as heartbroken mother, Toni Jones, describes the mama's boy she called Junior.

"As a mother the first thing you want to do is protect your baby and I couldn't do anything to protect him," says Jones.

Randy James Derochie Jr., 2, was riding in the car with family friend, Kay-Lynne Parkhurst, 19, on July 31 when the car swerved off Bradford Road, hit a tree, and burst into flames.

"At that point, I knew he was gone and my whole body went numb," says Jones.

It's been nearly impossible for Jones to go back to everyday life without her baby boy.

"Everyday waking up realizing that's it's the same thing over and over again. Realizing I can't have him, I can't see him, I can't touch him, I can't play with him, I can't hear him talk to me," says Jones.

When family friends decided to organize a benefit to pay off the funeral costs and other mounting bills , it was an offer Grandmother Melissa Jones says this struggling family couldn't refuse.

"I refuse to let my 23 year old daughter's credit be ruined over something like this. I refuse. I'll go without so my child and grandchild can rest in peace," says Jones.

The benefit will be held Sunday September 8 at Jake's Grub and Grog in Central Square from noon-5pm. Advance tickets are $12 and include a meal. Tickets at the door cost $15. The event includes live music and raffle prizes.
