Black Friday shopping starts early at Destiny USA

Holiday shoppers in Syracuse got a head start on Black Friday this year as thousands arrived at Destiny USA to take advantage of Thanksgiving Day sales throughout the mall.

Most arrived shortly after dinner time, though some began camping out as early as 4 a.m. to queue up at Best Buy. The electronics giant opened its doors at 6 p.m. tonight, a full six hours earlier than last year.

Kmart, Target, Toys-R-Us and Wal-Mart also opened their doors earlier this year to start the holiday shopping season sooner.

Macyâ??s, opening on Thanksgiving for the first time in their 155 year history, will stay open for a full 26 hours through traditional Black Friday. Joining Macyâ??s as first-timers on turkey day were J.C. Pennyâ??s and Kohlâ??s.

Retailers rely on the holiday shopping season for about of their annual profits. The 2013 season has been cut short by six days from 2012, though many experts expect sales will be up over last year.

Most of the deals and promotions offered in stores today and on Friday are also offered online, yet many still brave the Black Friday crowds for the allure of doorbuster deals and in-store only sales.
