Crews remove boat stuck by Baldwinsville dam safety cables
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. —
First responders had to free a boat Sunday morning that had gotten caught in the safety cable near the Baldwinsville Dam, according to Onondaga County 911 and the Baldwinsville Police Department.
Authorities received a initial report of the boat in distress at 10:14 p.m. Saturday. The only passenger on the craft was safely removed at 10:44 p.m. But the boat itself wasn't removed until 12:30 p.m. Sunday when specialized boat-towing equipment could be brought in.
According to police, the operator of the boat lives in Palo Verde, California and is not familiar with the area. He mistook the dam buoys for shallow water buoys while making his way down the river.
Removal of the boat was hindered Saturday night by fast-moving water conditions. Conventional methods of removing the boat were unsuccessful throughout the night. The safety cable was eventually cut Sunday to free the boat, police said.
