With schools' midwinter recess coming up, there are 'extra' activities, many free, mostly family-oriented here in Onondaga County over the next week and a half.
Winterfest, compiles the activities, but also add in some originals. Bill Cooper, who heads up the all-volunteer effort, says having a presenting sponsor this year, for the first time, helps.
Among the adds: fireworks, at Syracuse's Inner Harbor on Friday, Feb 17 at 7pm. Favorites like the Kids' Karnival and the Chili and Chowder Cookoffs, the Wing Walk and a Sandwich Stroll are all back, as are breakfasts with the Winterfest mascots.
Check the Winterfest Website or pick up the guidebook at any of the sponsors.
The Central New York Boat Show is listed as one of the Winterfest activities ---it opens Wednesday afternoon and runs through Sunday. Dave White, with NY Sea Grant (who joined us wearing a bright orange winter jumpsuit that also includes a floatation device) says that besides boats for sale, there are ongoing demonstrations of new safety products and safe boating practices through the show, which is at the State Fairgrounds
