Broome County man arrested for falsely reporting dozens of child abuse cases

Harry Clauson

A Broome County man is accused of falsely reporting almost 50 cases of child abuse over a five-month period.

43-year-old Harry Clauson of Whitney Point in northern Broome County is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, and 48-counts of making false child abuse reports.

State Police say he called the New York State Child Abuse Hot Line at odd hours, speaking of violent acts that occurred either against minor children, or happened in front of them.

In each instance, Broome County Child Protective Services, State Police, or the Broome County Sheriff's Department followed up - exposing the children to sensitive interviews and exams.

This went on for five months - from late last September, through February of this year.

Investigators say most of the reports were anonymous, but in some cases, Clauson used the names of other people - and they didn't know about it.

Clauson was arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court, and sent to the Broome County jail on $1,000 bail.
