Bystanders rescue man who nearly drowned at Ithaca Falls

Bystanders rescued a man who nearly drowned at the base of Ithaca Falls Monday.

Tompkins County 911 was called at about 1:30 pm Monday saying a man had drowned at Ithaca Falls. The Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance responded, along with Ithaca Police.

First responders found that bystanders had brought the man to shore and carried him to a trail entrance.

Authorities say the man was visiting friends in the area, and was breathing, but was only semi-conscious. He was taken to Cayuga County Medical Center for treatment. Police are investigating the incident.

Fire officials remind neighbors to be careful when swimming, and to obey all warning signs.
