A 31-year-old upstate New York woman has been sentenced to from 1 2/3 to 5 years in state prison for falsely claiming she had breast cancer and accepting thousands of dollars raised on her behalf.
Local media outlets report that Melissa Jones of Canandaigua was sentenced Wednesday in Ontario County Court, where she pleaded guilty in January to two counts each of grand larceny and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
She was charged in February 2012 after a series of fundraisers that prosecutors said took in money from almost 200 donors. At the time of her arrest, police said 17 fundraisers had already been held or were planned through June.
A prosecutor says Jones must also pay restitution. He says she took at least $42,000, with $9,300 recovered by police.
