The next time you head to Carousel Center, don't bother bringing letters or packages to send. The Postal Station at the mall will close its doors on Friday, April 1st.
Postal officials just notified CNY Central of the decision moments ago in a news release. Postal leaders tell us they were unable to reach an agreement with Carousel Center during lease negotiations over the past year.
The Carousel Center location is home to 155 mall tenants with post office boxes and 200 others who rent post office boxes there. They will now be moved to the Franklin Square Station on West Division Street.
A public hearing for those affected will be held to further identify options for tenants and other postal customers. There is still no word on the date or time for that meeting.
The Postal Service location has been at the mall since it opened in October 1990.
This isn't the first post office closing we've seen lately. Just last month, the Elmwood location on South Avenue in Syracuse shut its doors for good.
We also saw the post office on Main Street in North Syracuse shut down last month as well.
Postal officials tell CNY Central the decision was not related to these closings. Rather, we're told the space at the mall was more than the post office needed. They had hoped to secure a smaller, more affordable space, but were unable to come to an agreement.
