Chenango Co. man accused of stabbing man to death on the day before his birthday

A Chenango County man is accused of stabbing a man to death, arrested the day before his 29th birthday.

Kyle Whitfield is charged with murder in the second degree, accused of stabbing 33-year-old James Button, Jr. when the two men got into a fight at Whitfield's Loomis Lane address in the Town of Smithville, near Greene in Chenango County.

State Police say it happened just before 3:30 Monday afternoon; troopers and the Village of Greene police responded right afterwards.

Whitfield was arraigned and sent to the Chenango County jail without bail. His public defender, Zachary Wentworth, says a not guilty plea was entered on Whitfield's behalf at this arraignment. Wentworth says he didn't have enough details on the case yet to comment. He says a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.

State Police continue to investigate.
