Chenango County village gets federal flood money
A Chenango County village will get more than a million dollars in federal flood funding. Governor Cuomo's office made the announcement Friday.
The governor says FEMA will give $1.3 million to help with 13 residential properties in Greene that were damaged during Tropical Storm Lee. The properties are still at risk if there is flooding in the future.
"Tropical Storm Lee caused devastating damage in areas of the Southern Tier, including the Village of Greene, and unfortunately severe storms are likely to happen again in this region," Governor Cuomo said. "FEMA recognizes that the Village is vulnerable to flooding, and this funding will help affected owners to strengthen their properties against this threat. That is exactly what we are continuing to do across the state because experience has taught us that in the face of changing climate, we must build back stronger and smarter than before. Elevating these properties will mitigate loss and damage, ensuring that the community is better prepared for the future."
According to Cuomo's office, the properties were eligible for help through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program because of the continuing risk of future flooding in the area.
