The Chittenango School District is closing school Monday due to the overwhelming desire of faculty, staff and students to attend the funeral of social studies teacher Ms. Colleen Hyland.
"It just seemed like the right thing to do; she was an integral part of this school district," said Superintendant Mike Scheido on the decision to close school.
Scheido said there would not have been enough substitute teachers to cover for those wanting to attend the funeral.
Hyland was in a serious car crash on Harsh Road in the Town of Sullivan, while driving to school last Wednesday. Her car flipped upside down and landed in the Erie Canal. She died of her injuries early Thursday morning at Upstate Hospital.
The funeral service is scheduled for at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Church in Oneida.
