Cicero man sentenced to 7 years in prison for beating 3-year-old
A Cicero man will spend the next several years in prison for severely beating his girlfriend's three-year-old son over the summer.
In July, police responded to a home on Thompson Road in Cicero, and found a three-year-old boy who was being treated by medical personnel. The boyfriend of the childâ??s mother, 27-year-old John Bonitz, was arrested and charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child after police say he punched and kicked the toddler, causing internal and abdominal injuries. The child was critically injured and spent a week in the hospital, but survived.
The boyâ??s mother, 27-year-old Amanda Bishop, was also arrested on the same date for assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and obstructing governmental administration after her other two children - ages seven and ten - were found to have bruises on their bodies. Bishop was accused of striking one of them with a closed fist. Bishop and Bonitz share the home on Thompson Road.
Bonitz was sentenced to seven years in state prison in Onondaga County Court Tuesday morning. He had previously pleaded guilty to the felony assault charge.
