Civil War era headstone stolen from historic Oneida County cemetery

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office is investigating a cemetery desecration and theft at the Evergreen Cemetery located on Old Poland Road in the Town of Trenton.
The Sheriff's Office says an unknown number of suspects entered the cemetery sometime over the Memorial day weekend and stole a headstone dating from the Civil War Era. The suspects also knocked a second headstone over which, belonged to a veteran of World War I, World War II and Korea. The headstone was knocked off its base and flipped upside down where it was left.
Don and Anne McGilvray came to see if any other sites were affected. The couple couldn't understand why someone would damage such a sacred spot.
"That has to be at the top of the list for things that people can do that are really bad," said Anne McGilvray.
Don McGilvray hoped the thief would feel guilty and return the stone.
"Certainly you would think that would try on them, their conscience," said McGilvray.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for information in identifying any suspects and recovery of the irreplaceable head stone. Anyone with information please contact Deputy Craig Stockhauser at the Barneveld Field Office at 315-896-2985. All calls will be kept confidential.
