An Onondaga County man will spend the next 20 years of his life in prison for killing his then-girlfriend TMs young son.
31-year-old Jay John Barboni of Clay was convicted on August 4 of second degree murder and first degree manslaughter after striking 15-month-old Nicholas Taylor in the head repeatedly. The murder conviction carries a 20 years to life sentence, while the manslaughter sentence is for 20 years. The sentence was handed down Friday morning in Oswego County Court.
According to police, Barboni was babysitting the child in August 2008 at his mother TMs apartment in Fulton. Barboni had maintained that the child was fine when he was put to bed, but medical examiners say that Taylor died from severe head trauma.
Barboni and Taylor TMs mother were dating at the time of the toddler's death.
