CNY residents first to get letters requiring refiling of STAR forms

New York tax authorities have launched a new system to make sure people don't get property tax breaks they aren't entitled to.
The state tax department will be sending letters to the 2.6 million recipients of the Basic STAR exemption, starting with residents in central New York.
The letter includes directions on how to register for the break by a Dec. 31 deadline as part of a program to weed out anyone claiming the exemption on properties other than their primary residence.
Homeowners are entitled to the exemption if their family incomes are lower than $500,000.
The program doesn't include seniors getting the Enhanced STAR exemption. They're still required to apply annually or participate in an "income verification program."
Information is available on the tax department website.
Homeowners looking to keep their STAR tax breaks will have until December 31st to reapply.
