College student drowns in Mohawk River while out with friends

Authorities say a 21-year-old college student has drowned while spending the day with friends on an island in the Mohawk River in central New York.

Herkimer County District Attorney Jeff Carpenter tells local media that the group was near the Erie Canal's Lock 17 on the river when the man drowned Sunday afternoon in Little Falls, 65 miles east of Syracuse.

His body was later recovered through the efforts of police and fire crews.

The man's name and the college he attended haven't been released.

The investigation into his death continues.
