In Washington, there were more voices calling for the Washington football team to change its name. Congressman Dan Maffei spoke on the House floor, urging the team to make the change.
Maffei calls the team's name derogatory to Native Americans. He says it is a reminder of racism and generations of pain. "I rise today in support of Oneida representative Ray Halbritter's efforts to change the name of Washington, DC's National Football League team," Maffei (D, New York) said. "The name of Washington football team is derogatory to the Native Americans of this country." He also pushed for the team's owner and other NFL owners to meet with the Oneida Indian Nation to discuss the name change controversy.
President Obama recently met with the Oneida Indian Nation and advocated for the team to change its name.
Washington team owner Dan Snyder has said he will not change the name.
