Construction worker dies after Canastota wastewater treatment plant explosion last week

A construction worker has died from injuries suffered in an explosion last week at a central New York wastewater treatment plant.

Gail Whitney, mother of 58-year-old Richard C. Whitney Jr. of Bernhards Bay in Oswego County, tells

The Post-Standard

that her son died Saturday at a hospital burn center in Boston.

Whitney and another worker were injured last Wednesday while working at the wastewater treatment plant in the Madison County village of Canastota. The other man was treated at a Syracuse hospital and released.

Whitney was a steamfitter working for a subcontractor replacing old pipes at the facility.

Canastota police and fire officials haven't released details about the accident or what may have caused it. Village officials say the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
