Convicted killer and rapist David Renz gets 30 years in prison for child pornography

      David Renz

An Onondaga County man who cut off his ankle monitor before killing a woman and raping a 10-year-old girl has been sentenced for possessing child pornography.

Judge Norman Mordue sentenced 30-year-old David Renz of Cicero to 30 years in prison in federal court Wednesday morning. Prosecutors were seeking up to 70 years in prison.

Renz had been fitted with an ankle monitor while awaiting trial on the child porn charges, but cut it off before abducting Lori Bresnahan and the child at gunpoint from a Great Northern Mall parking lot on March 14, 2013.

Mordue instructed that the 30-year child porn sentence will run consecutively to the pending murder and rape sentence in Onondaga County Court. Federal prosecutors are still deciding whether to charge Renz with carjacking and murder, which could carry the death penalty.

In court papers, Renz's attorney says he's endured a lifetime of physical pain, bullying and isolation because he was born with a facial deformity. Renz randomly kidnapped the victims, raped the girl, and stabbed Bresnahan to death. His case sparked an overhaul of the federal probation program.

Lisa Fletcher, Assistant U.S. Attorney, told Mordue that when Renz was first charged with possession of child pornography in January 2013 he appeared to be a ??typical, run of the mill collector of child pornography,?? but because he had a job and to their knowledge this was his first offense they thought he did not pose a flight risk. This allowed Renz to go into home confinement and wear the aforementioned ankle bracelet.

??We now learn that there is no ??typical run of the mill collector?? of child pornography,?? said Fletcher.

Fletcher says Renz ??Carried out a plan,?? and committed one of the most horrific crimes this community has even seen. She pointed out that one of the videos that he had obtained depicted the very type of crime he carried out.

In asking for a sentence in excess of the federal guidelines for child pornography, Fletcher says Renz ??...proved who he is and what he is capable of doing."

Fletcher also revealed that while he was on home confinement he obtained even more child pornography, and she pointed out that he had a prior victim, but the ??elusive family court records remain sealed to this day.?? She says the victim came forward to prosecutors and described a year of abuse at the hands of Renz.

??Each and every child portrayed in 11,000 images and 1,100 videos?| every one of them is David Renz??s victim?? said Fletcher.

Neither Renz nor his attorneys had anything to say in court in his defense. Judge Mordue said he considered all of the factors and came up with the 30 year sentence. Mordue says ??The court finds this sufficient, but not greater than necessary.??

Renz will be sentenced on the murder and rape charges in Onondaga County Court in May. He is expected to get life in prison without the possibility of parole.
