Convicted rapist who cut ankle bracelet off gets prison time

Ronald Cook (Oneida County Jail)

The convicted rapist who cut off his GPS ankle bracelet and didn't report to his assigned patrol officer back in November was sentenced to prison on Monday.

According to WKTV, Ronald Cook, 66, of Utica, accepted a plea deal to serve six months in prison in Rome City Court. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the criminal mischief charges.

The DOCCS sent out an alert on Nov. 9 regarding Cook's wanted status. Cook had been last seen in Scranton, Pennsylvania before traveling to Binghamton. He was apprehended by Binghamton Police on Nov. 11.

Police said Cook was arrested at a restaurant after being recognized because of media reports.

Cook is a level three sex offender who was convicted of raping a 24-year-old woman in Binghamton on Oct. 24, 1990. The website says Cook was sentenced to 25 years in state prison after being convicted in August 1991. He was also convicted in 1988 of first-degree sexual abuse and impersonating a police officer.
