Man convicted of sexually assaulting girl,12, in back of his pickup truck

Tompkins County

A Tompkins County jury convicted a 33-year-old man of sexual assault after driving two 12-year-old girls to an Ithaca campsite and sexually abusing one of them, the District Attorney said.

Matthew J. Williams was found guilty of driving the girls to a secluded campsite at Danby State Forest and giving them alcohol in June of 2016.

The Tompkins County DA said Williams later sexually abused one of the girls in the back of his pickup truck.

The two girls then ran away from Williams and hid in the woods for hours until they were found around 7:00 a.m. the next day, the DA said.

It took the jury five hours before convicting Williams of sexual abuse in the first degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Williams now faces a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison followed by ten years of post-release supervision. He is expected to be sentenced on August 25th.
