Damage from Granby onion plant fire estimated at more than $1 million

Onion farm fire, Granby

Firefighters are still putting out hot spots from a massive fire at an onion plant in Granby.

The fire broke out around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Sorbello & Son's Farm. The barn is located on County Route 8 between Highway 176 and Russell Road. The flames engulfed a 10,000 square-foot pole barn with 5,000 crates of onions stacked floor to ceiling.

Morris Sorbello says 115,000 bags of onions were destroyed by the fire. The entire batch of 50 lb. bags destroyed have an estimated value of $1 million.

Sorbello says he is hopeful insurance will cover the crop loss and damage to the building.

"We'll manage someway, we'll do some things. We'll finish up the other buildings that have onions in them," said Sorbello.

In all, 125 volunteer firefighters from 35 different departments were on the scene, working to put out the fire.

Fire investigators are still searching for a cause.
