Deputies: Homer man steals car during test drive, later crashes it

A Cortland County man is arrested after deputies say he stole a car during a test drive and crashed it.

Deputies say Kahari Thomas, who had a warrant out for his arrest, met with a Homer man to test drive a car he was selling. Once on the test drive, deputies say Thomas asked if he could drive the vehicle, and when the owner stepped out to switch seats, Thomas jumped behind the wheel and took off down Wolf Road, leaving the owner behind.

Thomas lost control of the vehicle a short time later, hitting a ditch and flipping it over onto the roof, coming to rest in the middle of the Route 90 and Wolf Road intersection. Thomas was taken to the hospital for treatment of a cut to the face. He was then taken to Town of Homer Court and remanded to jail with no bail.

The investigation further showed that Thomas had stolen a license plate from a parked car in the Town of Homer to use on the stolen vehicle. The owner of the plate witnessed the theft and called police.

Thomas is charged with grand larceny, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property, violation of parole and several other vehicle and traffic violations.
