Students and staff in the DeRuyter Central School District will be dismissed early on Thursday and Friday due to the passing of a longtime faculty member.

The district announced Wednesday on its website and in a letter to parents that school will let out at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday so members can mourn the death of retired teacher and coach Steve Camelbeek, 66, who passed away on Monday.

According to his obituary, Camelbeek taught agriculture, technology, and physical education and coached cross country, track, and basketball at DeRuyter for 43 years. He was also a basketball referee and 40-year veteran volunteer firefighter.

Calling hours will be held at the school from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. The funeral service will be private. Contributions may be made to:
