The Town of DeWitt Police Department tells CNY Central that it has made an arrest after a robbery at the Carrier Circle Mobil gas station on Thompson Road Thursday night.
According to a news release, police say that 44-year-old Levon Cooper of Gifford Street in Syracuse has been charged with third degree robbery. Police say Cooper was found at the Red Roof Inn on Thompson Road by investigators who were following up on the initial investigation into the robbery. Police say Cooper was taken to police headquarters and arrested after being interviewed. He was then arraigned in DeWitt Town Court and remanded to the Onondaga County Justice Center without bail.
Police say Cooper is currently on parole for a prior robbery conviction.
Thursday night, police say a woman was putting gas in her vehicle when she was approached by a man - now alleged to be Cooper - claiming to be a gas station employee. The victim became suspicious of the man and tried to get into her car. Police say the suspect pulled the car door open before she could close it.
Police say the suspect choked the woman and hit her in the chest, trying to take her wallet. The victim was able to convince the suspect to take only the cash in her wallet. He then fled, and was last seen going into the Red Roof Inn. "I was surprised," says Art Hayes, owner of the Carrier Circle Mobil Station. "I've been at this location a long time and any robberies we've had have dealt with the store being held up, first time I've ever had a customer have to face such a situation."
According to DeWitt Police, the woman had some minor injuries but did not need to go to the hospital. The DeWitt police chief told us Cooper admitted to the crime saying he needed the money to buy drugs.
