Dive teams find remains of infant in Mohawk River

Jevon Wameling

State Police dive teams found an infant's body in the Mohawk River near Leland Avenue Friday morning, but have not confirmed it is the body of missing Utica baby Levon Wameling.

Divers were acting on what police called "reliable information" that Levon Wameling might be found in that section of the Mohawk River.

The remains, found in a container in the water, will be taken to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner for autopsy. Police would not say if the container was weighed down.

Levon's father, Jevon Wameling, is currently in jail on a felony burglary charge. He has not been charged in the missing child case.

Jevon Wameling first reported his son was missing on June 11 through an attorney, saying baby Levon was kidnapped off the front porch of their Jay Street home on May 29. Police performed several searches throughout Oneida County over the past few months, with no results until Friday.

Utica Police say they "still have a lot if work to do" before any charges could be filed in the Levon Wameling case.
