Driver in fatal Syracuse drive-by shooting of Kihary Blue pleads guilty

A street gang member has admitted to being the driver in the drive-by shooting that claimed the life of a former star athlete in Syracuse three years ago.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that 27-year-old Habakkuk Nickens pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Syracuse to racketeering charges.

Authorities say Nickens drove a van that was used in the killing of 19-year-old Kihary Blue in downtown Syracuse in November 2010. Blue was a college student who had been a football and basketball star at a Syracuse high school.

Prosecutors say Nickens was a leader of a Syracuse street gang. They say the gunman in the van was aiming for rival gang members in the car Blue was riding in.

Nickens faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced Jan. 14.
