Driver in West Street accident was using GPS, drove wrong way on one way street

An East Syracuse woman is charged with driving the wrong way on a one way street following a two car crash that occurred on the West Street exit ramp from Route 690 Westbound just before 10:00 p.m. Sunday night.

Police say a Toyota Corolla had been driving the wrong way on West Street when it struck a Kia Optima.

The Toyota Corolla was operated by 21-year-old Laura Zakheim of East Syracuse.

Police say the investigation revealed that Zakheim was using a GPS device for directions, and inadvertently drove the wrong way onto the West Street exit ramp. Zakheim struck a Kia Optima that was on the West Street exit ramp headed towards Fayette Street.

The Kia Optima was operated by 30-year-old Lorraine Whitley of Syracuse.

Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Upstate Hospital.

The exit ramp to West Street from 690 West was closed for about an hour while police cleared the scene.

Zakheim was ticketed for driving the wrong way on a one way and will appear in Syracuse City Traffic Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Neither vehicle had any passengers.
