Driver ticketed after collision with Syracuse Police vehicle

A car crash involving a Syracuse police vehicle is under investigation.

Just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, a Syracuse Police Prisoner Transport van was traveling south on West Street in the left lane when an SUV traveling in the same direction in the middle tried to make a left turn onto West Fayette Street. The vehicles collided. The police vehicle hit a light pole and the SUV hit the exterior wall of the red building located at the intersection.

The driver of the SUV was identified as 65 year-old Joseph Barbaro of Marcellus. Police say he complained about a sore shoulder, but refused medical attention.

The police officer was David Glisson, 53. Police say Glisson complained of back pain and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was treated and released.

Barbaro was ticketed for unsafe lane change and improper left turn. He'll appear in City of Syracuse Traffic Court at a later date to answer to the charges.
